So, what was that “something simple” that tripped me up right at the finish line? In my heightened state of anxiety, with everything riding on that test, I ran a stop sign. A classic, rookie error, the kind you kick yourself for. Just when I could almost taste success, I veered off course.
The immediate aftermath was a gut punch. The dreams of the mines, the job, the financial stability – all seemed to crumble with Kevin’s polite but firm declaration of failure. My mantra, “FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning,” felt like a cruel joke. To console myself, I did what any self-respecting failure hero would do: I went straight for the comfort food. My mission? A glorious chocolate and cream cake.
After burying my sorrows in confectionary, my next craving hit: chili-flavored chickpeas. Don’t ask, it’s a thing. I headed to a local Thai restaurant, walked in, and said hello. As I scanned for the chickpeas, my eyes landed on a familiar face. It was the girl who’d helped me navigate the confusing Perth bus card system a month earlier when I was heading to meet my cousin.
“Hello!” I chirped, backpack still on, embodying the working holiday hero persona.
She blanked me. Flat out ignored my presence. Just stared through me. I mumbled something, feeling a familiar wave of shame, and made my exit, backpack still firmly on my back. Right, then.
Later that night, my phone buzzed. It was her, slipping into my DMs with an apology. Turns out, my full beard had thrown her off. Fair enough, I’d been rocking some serious facial hair. We chatted, and I, ever the charmer, invited her to my place. Sensibly, we settled on meeting at the park instead.
The next day, with renewed determination, I retook the Heavy Rigid test. This was my last chance. My new instructor was a godsend, boosting my confidence by simply saying, “You’re a good driver.” I was fueled by a potent (and in hindsight, questionable) combination of Deep Heat and Red Bull to ensure maximum alertness. I passed. The relief was immense.
That evening, I went to the park. And from that day, a year ago, I haven’t been apart from the lady I met at the bus stop a month earlier.

That stop sign, that chocolate cake, those chili chickpeas, and that awkward encounter at the Thai restaurant were all threads in a tapestry I couldn’t see at the time. My “failure” wasn’t just a setback; it was the unexpected detour that led me straight to the love of my life.
